Hydromorphone is proven pain relief.
The active ingredient in EXALGO is hydromorphone, a pain reliever similar to morphine. Hydromorphone was developed in the 1920s and has been widely used over the years.
At present, EXALGO is the only oral, extended-release hydromorphone tablet available in the
United States. Since 2006, many patients in Europe have used this same medicine under the name Jurnista™.
Before starting on EXALGO, please read the content on this Web site. While we strongly believe that you should not have to live with chronic pain, your safety is our first concern.
Jurnista is a trademark of Johnson & Johnson.
The difference between dependence and addiction.
Relief of daily pain is a goal you should not be afraid to pursue. You may be concerned about addiction. Opioid use does not mean you will become addicted. You may develop a physical dependence on EXALGO over time. Physical dependence means that you may build up a tolerance for EXALGO that may require the dose to be increased. You may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop the medicine all at once. With an addiction, people feel a very strong urge to take a medicine, even though they know it could harm them. Please discuss any concerns with your doctor.
Dealing with pain while EXALGO is reaching effective levels.
EXALGO is an extended-release medicine. It usually takes 6 to 8 hours to begin to feel pain relief. The active ingredient in EXALGO is hydromorphone, which is slowly released into the bloodstream. It may take up to 3 to 4 days for EXALGO to reach maximum effectiveness. After that, the medicine in EXALGO should remain at a constant level. Your doctor will help you manage any pain during this time.
Do not take another dose of EXALGO within 24 hours unless your doctor tells you. Taking a second dose within 24 hours may cause you to overdose. An overdose can cause death.
Part science, part patient/doctor teamwork.
Everyone deals with pain in their own way. Every body reacts to medicine in its own way. Finding the right dose of EXALGO may take some time. Your doctor may make changes to your dose. Managing chronic pain is the goal, even if it takes a little time to get there. There is even a chance that EXALGO is not right for you. Please be patient and follow your doctor's orders. Never take more EXALGO than your doctor prescribes.
Your body cannot absorb the EXALGO shell.
Once in a while you may see something in your stool that looks like a tablet. This is normal. The medicine has been absorbed into your bloodstream. Your body will excrete the EXALGO tablet's outer shell naturally.
